Former Saint Anthony Hargrove denies bounty for Favre hit - USA TODAY

Anthony Hargrove, the former Saints lineman who pulverized Brett Favre in the 2009 NFC Championship and later celebrated his injury, called the hit a mistake and says he did not receive a reward for the play.

The upcoming free agent issued a statement to the media Wednesday, denying that his hit on Favre following an interception was motivated by the Saints cash incentive program for injuring opponents, as revealed last week by the NFL.

"The late hit and the comments were both mistakes," he said, adding that he did not want Favre to be injured and he received "nothing for the play some keep referencing."

Later in the game, Hargrove celebrated the quarterback's ankle injury, yelling "Favre is out of the game! Favre is done! Favre is done!"" according to a Sports Illustrated report.

Said Hargrove: "Players all over the league do the same thing every Sunday, make late hits and say stupid things. But I can say with absolute certainty that neither the late hit nor the comment have anything whatsoever to do with the issue being so hotly discussed in the media."
